NEW  DEXYS  ALBUM  OUT  NOW

Soar.jpg

The long-awaited (...and much-delayed) follow-up to Dexys Midnight Runners' classic 1985 album "Don't Stand Me Down" was finally released on 4th June, 2012.

"One Day I'm Going To Soar", a collection of songs composed over the last twenty years, signals the return of Kevin Rowland and former band members Mick Talbot, Pete Williams, Jim Paterson, Lucy Morgan and Neil Hubbard (alongside new recruit, Madeleine Hyland) under the now-shortened name of "Dexys". The songs which chart Rowland's childhood memories through to his failed attempts at love and a displaced sense of national identity are, as previously promised in interviews, "lyrically autobiographical" while, musically, the songs see Rowland continue his love afair with classic Soul music and, more specifically, the Memphis sound of Al Green. "One Day I'm Going To Soar" has already been hailed by many as one of the albums of the year and a fitting addition to Dexys' legacy of work.

  KEVIN UNCUT

In January 2008 Kevin Rowland spoke to Nigel Williamson of Uncut Magazine about work on the new Dexys album:

I have it in my head - the lyrics, the music and the track-listing. I'm in the process of demo-ing the songs with Andy Lewis who's on Acid Jazz and has worked with Paul Weller. We've just finished the first two songs and there's a version of what will be the final track on the album, "It's OK Johanna" already on MySpace. It's different from what I've done before. I've never been interested in recreating the past, but it will be a Dexys album. I don't know when it will be ready or who will play on the record. I want to get everything 100 percent right, and know that it's the best I can do and every note is there for a reason. Then I'll see who's right for the songs. If it's a hit album, that would be nice. But that's just a by-product of why I'm doing it. The only way I can be satisfied is to make the record I'm hearing in my head on my own terms.

September 2007 also saw the release of a Motown compilation with selections hand-picked by Kevin Rowland.

Entitled "Made To Measure", it featured the classic Motown singles which have meant the most to Kevin over the years - including Jimmy Ruffin's brilliant "I'll Say Forever My Love" name-checked in Dexys Midnight Runners' "Reminisce Part Two"

Since early 2006 Kevin Rowland has been forging a successful new career as a D.J. - with appearances at clubs, festivals and on the radio - whilst working on material for the forthcoming Dexys album. Reports indicate that he has been demoing the new songs with producer/D.J. (and occasional Paul Weller side-man) Andy Lewis. There has been no release date announced yet for the long-promised project.

KEVIN ROWLAND MAKES STORMING RETURN TO STOCKHOLM

Kevin-and-The-Club-Killers.jpg

Kevin Rowland made his first live appearances in almost a year on 22nd and 23rd of February 2006 when he performed at Stockholm's Debaser club - a venue Kevin considers to be the best in Europe. He was accompanied, as he was on a previous visit to Sweden back in May 2004, by the club's house band, Club Killers.

Classic Dexys songs "Let's Make This Precious", "Come On Eileen", "Geno" and "Old" were given passionate performances alongside covers of "The Sound of Silence", "Everything I Own" and the Moneybrother song "It's Been Hurting All The Way With You Joanna." On the 24th of February Kevin and the 15-piece Swedish band relocated to Lund in southern Sweden for another show which included a rousing rendition of Kevin's magnum opus "This Is What She's Like."

These shows follow the recent announcements that a new Dexys album is planned for release this year and appear to confirm that Kevin Rowland is ready for yet another return to the limelight. Speaking to Swedish journalist, Andres Lokko during his visit he explained that "a whole new album is written. I’ve recorded demos for all the songs. Now if only someone would want to distribute it." NEW DEXYS ALBUM "WILL APPEAR LATER THIS YEAR"

kevin_rowland_2005.jpg

The long wait for a new Dexys Midnight Runners album should hopefully be over by the end of 2006!

On 20th January 2006 Kevin Rowland appeared as a guest reviewer on BBC 6 Music's "Round Table" show. He revealed that recently he's been writing some new songs and that the direction these songs are taking is "lyrically autobiographical, I suppose - just about my life... it's for a Dexys album, please God, that's the plan. It's hard to talk about music - you'll just have to wait and hear it really." He added "We've waited this long anyway, so a bit longer won't make any difference!"

Four days later The Sun newspaper reported that Blur bassist Alex James is writing a song for the new Dexys album and may feature in future live performances with the band. The sudden surge of news stories about Dexys continued on 26th January when Radio 2's Ken Bruce Show featured a brief item about the forthcoming album which will apparently include reworkings of the songs written with Jimmy Paterson around the start of the 1990's. The new album is seemingly scheduled for a 2006 release! (Listen to audio clips from these radio shows here)

These bits of news follow on from the comments made by Kevin Rowland last year when interviewed for the Ken Bruce show on Radio 2. He announced then that Dexys were back in the studio putting a new album together. He explained that they were looking for a deal and acknowledge that this might not be easy: 'Deals are not as easy to come by these days'. Kevin added that it was important that the recordings were not rushed and the finished product was quality.

Deaf School, formed in 1975 in Liverpool, proved to be a fertile breeding-ground for musical talent, launching the careers of (amongst others) singer Betty Bright and gutarist Clive Langer who went on to produce Madness and Dexys Midnight Runners!
